Suspicious death in Iqaluit Under Investigation – UPDATED

Iqaluit, Nunavut – On May 15, 2020, Iqaluit RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious death. V Division Major Crimes Unit took conduct of the investigation and the death was deemed a homicide. On May 16, 2020 the Major Crimes Unit, arrested a 23-year-old man for murder.

23-year-old Brandon Lyta of Kimmirut, NU was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder. He appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. Lyta’s next scheduled court appearance is July 6, 2020 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit, NU.

BACKGROUND

Iqaluit, Nunavut – This morning at approximately 2:30 am, Iqaluit RCMP responded to a man in medical distress in the 4100 block area. The victim was transported to the Qikiqtani General Hospital where he succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The circumstances surrounding the death appear to be suspicious and the RCMP are treating this as a homicide investigation.
