Joint Investigation By SPS And RPS Drug Units Leads To Arrests, Methamphetamine Seizure

Regina, Saskatchewan – A man and a woman from British Columbia were arrested and charged by the Saskatoon Police Service Drug Unit on May 20, 2020 in relation to a joint drug trafficking investigation with Regina Police Service.

Earlier this year, the SPS Drug Unit began investigating a man who was believed to be selling methamphetamine in Saskatoon. Through investigation, the suspect was observed travelling to Regina and exchanging items, believed to be drugs, before returning to Saskatoon.

With the assistance of the Tactical Support Unit, a traffic stop was conducted as the vehicle returned to Saskatoon. The two occupants were arrested and charged, and Police seized 4951 grams of methamphetamine packaged in five separate bags (a photo of this seizure is provided). Police also seized $1830 in cash, two smart phones and a Canadian passport.

As a result of the traffic stop, a search warrant was executed at an apartment in the 400 block of Avenue C South, however nothing of evidentiary value was located inside.

A 21-year-old man from Burnaby, BC, and a 21-year-old woman from Port Coquitlam, BC, are both charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine and Possession of Proceeds of Crime Under $5000. (Court Info # 991128664)

Three additional persons were charged by the Regina Police Service Drug Unit on May 21, 2020.

BACKGROUND

The Regina Police Service Drug Unit (RDU) in conjunction with the Saskatoon Police Service Drug Unit completed a joint investigation into drug trafficking within the cities of Regina and Saskatoon. As a result of the investigation in the two cities, Saskatoon completed enforcement action within Saskatoon on May 20, 2020. The Regina Drug Unit completed enforcement in relation to the investigation in Regina, the following day: May 21, 2020.

As a result of the investigation in Regina, three males: 20 year-old Nuno-Miguel DESOUSA of Burnaby, BC, 41 year-old Shahid AZIZ of Regina, SK, and 43 year-old Christopher Charles LAFONTE of Regina, SK, were all charged in relation to the drug trafficking investigation. Each individual’s charges are as follows:

AZIZ and DESOUSA are jointly charged with the following offences:

Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine) [5(2)CDSA];

Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl) [5(2)CDSA]; and

Possession of proceeds of crime over $5000 [355(A)CC].

DESOUSA also received the additional charges of:

Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine) [5(2)CDSA]; and

Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (Xanax) [5(2)CDSA].

The following evidence was seized in Regina at the conclusion of the investigation:

Approximately 500 grams of fentanyl

300 grams of cocaine

4500 grams of methamphetamine

200 grams of Xanax

$9000.00 Canadian currency

All accused made their first court appearances in Provincial Court on May 22, 2020.
