RCMP Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit arrest wanted male following police vehicle rammings

Rocky Mountain House, Alberta – On July 2, the Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (CAD CRU) took three subjects into custody following police vehicle rammings, a collision with a civilian vehicle, and a police pursuit. All three are facing criminal charges as a result of the incidents.

At 4:30 p.m., a CAD CRU member observed Cole Joseph Obdam, who was known to be wanted on multiple outstanding arrest warrants, driving a vehicle in Rocky Mountain House. The vehicle also had two female occupants. The CAD CRU members were making an attempt to contain the vehicle in a parking lot when it intentionally rammed two police motor vehicles and one civilian vehicle. While fleeing, the vehicle struck an RCMP member on the leg.

The vehicle fled from the parking lot and a pursuit was initiated. The suspect vehicle travelled on gravel roads towards the town of Sylvan Lake, while avoiding tire deflation device attempts.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., the vehicle attempted to drive across a farmer’s field off Highway 781 where it became stuck. The three occupants were arrested without further incident. A loaded shotgun was recovered from inside the vehicle. All three occupants were transported to Sylvan Lake Detachment where they were lodged.

Cole Obdam is facing criminal charges and a judicial interim release hearing is pending. The 24-year-old and 21-year-old female passengers are facing criminal charges and will be released on Undertakings.

The RCMP can confirm that during the pursuit, one of the RCMP vehicles was involved in a separate collision with two uninvolved civilian vehicles at an intersection. A traffic analyst is investigating this collision.

No RCMP members, civilians, or accused subjects, were injured during this incident.
