Alberta Major Crimes Unit lay second degree murder charges in 2019 St. Paul homicide of Kimberly Cardinal

St. Paul, Alberta – An extensive investigation that spanned just over a year and involved several supporting Units has led the RCMP Major Crimes Unit to lay charges in the murder of Kimberly Cardinal.

Billy Joe Brertton (43) of Saddle Lake was arrested on July 14, 2020 and today was charged with second degree murder and improperly interfering with the human remains of Kimberly Cardinal. A bail hearing was held and Brertton is remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 23, 2020 in St. Paul Provincial Court.

No other suspects are being sought in this homicide.

St. Paul RCMP seek public assistance to locate missing female – Update 2

St. Paul Alta. ¬ On June 25, 2019, human remains were located in the Saddle Lake area.

On July 24, 2019, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner positively identified the remains as Kimberly Cardinal who was last seen in Saddle Lake, Alberta on April 23, 2019.

The circumstances surrounding her death are suspicious and RCMP Major Crimes North has taken carriage of the investigation.

On May 8, 2019 a search was conducted on Saddle Lake Cree Nation involving community members with assistance of St. Paul Search and Rescue and RCMP.

The investigation continues and police are asking anyone with information on Kimberly’s whereabouts to contact the St. Paul RCMP Detachment at 780¬645¬8870 or call your local police.

Kimberly is described as:

• Indigenous

• 5’7” tall

• Approximately 200 pounds

• Brown hair

• Brown eyes

• Scar on back shoulder
