Wood Buffalo RCMP on scene of fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 881 – UPDATE, details released

Janvier, Alberta – (5:01 PM) Highway 881 is no longer being rerouted and emergency crews are no longer on scene. A motor vehicle heading southbound on Highway 881 struck a moose, approximately 2 kilometres north of the Janvier Access Road, which resulted in the adult male driver and the rear driver’s side adult female passenger pronounced deceased at scene. The front adult male passenger and the rear youth male passenger were transported via RMWB ground ambulance to a local hospital and have since been treated and released. The moose was found deceased at the scene.

Anzac Fire Department, Janvier Fire Department, RMWB Fire Department, RMWB ground Ambulance and Wood Buffalo RCMP responded and provided emergency services on scene.

Wood Buffalo RCMP continue to investigate.

No further updates are anticipated.

BACKGROUND

Conklin, Alberta — (3:47 AM) On July 23, 2020, at approximately 12:40 a.m. Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision involving a moose on Highway 881, approximately 20 kilometres North of Conklin.

The driver and a passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two additional passengers were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Traffic on Highway 881 near Kilometre marker 217 is being re-routed while the Wood Buffalo RCMP and an RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate. Wood Buffalo RCMP are advising motorists to expect significant delays and consider an alternate travel route.

The names of the deceased will not be released. An update will be provided when available.
