Nanaimo, BC – In the past month the Nanaimo RCMP have responded to a dozen reports of vehicles broken into on or nearby the Nanaimo River Rd. In most cases the cars were parked overnight while their owners headed into the backcountry to camp.
On one night alone three cars were targeted. The vehicles were all locked and the thieves smashed multiple windows to gain access. One vehicle had every single window smashed out. The owners reported the vehicles had been rummaged through with items of limited value being taken. The windows are being smashed regardless of whether valuables are visible or not.
The Nanaimo River Rd is rural, largely unlit and sees limited use during the night making it an ideal area for thieves to target. Outdoor enthusiasts accessing the backcountry overnight may want to consider being dropped off to avoid leaving their vehicle undefended.
