UPDATE: Winnipeg Police lay charges in homicide of Dexter Cortavista Dejarisco

Winnipeg, Manitoba – Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation and identified a second suspect. On August 20, 2020, he was placed under arrest.

Brennan Eugene Robert Bercier, a 24-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with Second Degree Murder. He was detained in custody.

It is believed that Hansen and Bercier are acquaintances and were together when the victim was shot.

No further arrests are anticipated at this time.

As previously released in January 2019:

On January 7, 2019, at approximately 10:30 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to a residence located in the 500 block of Burrows Avenue for a report of a male who had been shot.

First responders located a male victim in his 30’s who had sustained a serious gunshot wound to the upper body. He was conveyed to hospital in critical condition. The victim remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after arrival, officers detained an adult male at the scene.

Benny Lance Hansen, a 34-year-old, of Winnipeg, was arrested and charged with:

– Aggravated Assault

– Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon

– Unauthorized Possession of Firearm

– Careless Use of a Firearm

– Discharge Firearm

– Fail to Comply with Recognizance x 2

– Possess Firearm

He was detained in custody.

On January 15, 2019, the victim in the assault succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as Dexter Cortavista Dejarisco, a 31-year-old male.

As a result, Hansen was charged with Second Degree Murder and was returned to custody.
