Alberta Sheriffs release stats from Labour Day Weekend

Edmonton, Alberta – This Labour Day long weekend, while Albertans were out enjoying everything the province has to offer, Sheriff Highway Patrol members were out patrolling provincial highways to ensure the safety of motorists. From Friday to Monday, officers issued a total of 1,654 tickets, including:

– 1,160 for speeding

– 45 for not wearing a seatbelt

– 19 for distracted driving

– 6 for no insurance

– 5 for driving while unauthorized

– 41 for other moving violations

– 20 for liquor and cannabis violations

– 358 for other non-moving violations

Throughout the weekend, officers with the Impairment Detection Unit screened 838 drivers and:

– charged 11 with Criminal Code impaired driving

– charged 6 with breach of conditions

– issued Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) to 8 drivers

– charged 12 GDL drivers for having alcohol in their system while driving

– issued two 24-hour suspensions

– executed 19 warrants

In addition, CVSA certified officers inspected a total of 85 commercial vehicles; 26 of which were placed out of service for critical safety issues.
