Nanaimo, BC – After a three-year investigation led by the Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit, Steven Bacon is now charged with the First Degree Murder of 16-year-old Makayla Chang. Presently, no date has been set when Mr. Bacon will make his first appearance on the murder charge.
Last seen on March 17, 2017 Makayla Chang was reported missing to the Nanaimo RCMP on March 22, 2017. Makayla’s body was recovered in May 2017.
In August of 2019, the Nanaimo RCMP requested the assistance of the public to help locate Mr. Bacon, leading to his arrest in September of 2019 in Fredericton, NB on unrelated charges.
Makayla’s family, and the community of Nanaimo and of Vancouver Island as a whole have been greatly affected by the loss of this young life. Hopefully, this charge can assist with providing answers and bringing a degree of resolution to Makayla’s family, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
The Nanaimo RCMP wishes to thank all those who assisted in this investigation, which includes private citizens, businesses, and various investigative and police agencies throughout Canada. Without their assistance this outcome would not have possible.
As the matter is now before the court, the Nanaimo RCMP will have no further comment and will release no further information at this time.
