Candle Lake, Saskatchewan – On Saturday, September 12, 2020, just before 10 p.m., Saskatchewan RCMP received a 911 report of a male who had been shot inside a residence located on Industrial Drive in Candle Lake, SK. Smeaton, Nipawin and Prince Albert RCMP Detachments along with EMS immediately responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, a 14-year-old male was located by police inside the residence with apparent gunshot wounds and was declared deceased on scene by EMS. Police located three other people at the residence.
Initial police investigation determined a 49-year-old male suspect, who was armed with a firearm, was assaulting a female occupant of the residence, when the other occupants of the residence intervened. Tragically, the victim was shot during this incident. Another occupant, an adult male, was able to successfully disarm the suspect. The suspect immediately fled the scene.
The occupants involved in the altercation sustained minor injuries. All occupants were escorted to a safe location. The scene was secured for investigation and the firearm was seized by police.
During the evening, police officers set up a perimeter around the residence to contain the scene and allow police officers to conduct the investigation. Based on the information gathered throughout the investigation, police officers identified no risk or danger to residents in the community.
Further investigation revealed the 49-year-old male suspect responsible for the shooting was believed to be in another residence located on Steen Place in Candle Lake. The Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team along with Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services, Saskatchewan Conservation Officers and the Saskatoon Police Service aircraft all responded to the scene.
At approximately 6 a.m., on September 13, the 49-year-old male suspect was located deceased inside the residence with an apparent gunshot wound, which appeared to have been self-inflicted. There were no other occupants in the residence.
Autopsies are being conducted by the Saskatchewan Corner’s Service today.
Next of kin notifications have been completed and Victim Services have been offered. The families involved have requested privacy from any media inquiries.
A perimeter surrounding the two residences continues to be in effect for further examination. Saskatchewan RCMP would like to thank residents in the community for their understanding and for providing officers with the space required to conduct a thorough investigation.
