Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador – Twenty-two-year-old Michael Katshinak of Sheshatshiu was taken into custody yesterday by Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP for committing arson on two cabins and a shed in the area of Edwards Brook on Route 500, approximately 75 km outside of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m., Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP received a report of a cabin fire. Police and the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture attended the scene and learned of two more fires in the area. Witnesses observed an unknown man running in the woods and then saw the same man sitting on the side of the road with what looked to be a rifle. RCMP Police Dog Services were called in to assist and the highway was temporarily blocked off.
Katshinak, who was found in possession of two Airsoft rifles, was located on the side highway and was taken into custody without incident.
A truck, which appeared to be stuck in the mud near one of the burning cabins, was also on fire. Investigators believe that the fire spread from the burning cabin to the vehicle. The truck was reported as stolen yesterday morning from a commercial property in Sheshatshiu sometime overnight.
Fire Scene Investigators with Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP and Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene yesterday and continue their investigation today.
