UPDATE: 10-month-old infant passenger succumbs to injuries sustained in Winnipeg Collision

Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Winnipeg Police Service had previously released details on a fatal Motor Vehicle Collision that occurred on September 26, 2020. Four people were travelling in a vehicle that was struck by a second vehicle in the intersection of Andrews Street and Boyd Avenue. An adult female was killed in the collision.

Tragically, the 10-month infant passenger succumbed to his injuries today. Additional Criminal Code charges have not been laid at the time of writing, but are expected in the coming days.

As previously released:

On September 26, 2020, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a Winnipeg Police Service, Traffic Unit, was in the area of Main Street and Boyd Avenue. Officers observed a vehicle in the area and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Upon observing the traffic unit, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed.

Within seconds, the fleeing vehicle collided with a second vehicle at the intersection of Andrews Street and Boyd Avenue, a distance of two blocks. Four people from the struck vehicle (including an infant and a child) and two from the fleeing vehicle were transported to hospital, most in critical or serious condition. An adult female from the struck vehicle has succumbed to her injuries.

On September 27, police charged the driver of the vehicle, Armand Joseph Jr. Chartrand, 43, with the following offences:

– Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Causing Death

– Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance x 4

– Cause Death by Criminal Negligence

– Cause Bodily Harm by Criminal Negligence x 4

– Drive While Suspended (HTA)

– Drive Drive Without Insurance

Chartrand was detained in custody.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and will assume responsibility for the investigation.
