Fort Simpson RCMP call in Underwater Recovery Team to assist with search – LOCATED

Fort Simpson RCMP, with the assistance of the BC RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) have located the missing operator of a submerged piece of equipment.

On Tuesday, December 15, the BC RCMP URT were able to enter the standing water, in which the excavator and operator went into on December 8.

A 58 year-old man was located deceased and has been transferred over to the care of the NWT Coroner Service.

The RCMP have concluded their involvement in the matter.

BACKGROUND

Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories – Fort Simpson RCMP have requested assistance from the BC RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) to assist with a search for the missing operator of a submerged piece of equipment.

A large excavator went into standing water on December 8 and the operator is presumed deceased. Efforts to pump water out of the standing water has proven difficult and unsuccessful given the extreme weather conditions. The excavator has been removed from the area, however, RCMP continue to search for the missing operator. The BC Underwater Recovery Team is a specialized unit trained to deal with unique diving conditions such as the ice and extreme cold.
