Airdrie RCMP warn of “fake gold” jewelry scam

Airdrie, Alberta – On Dec. 1, 2020, at approximately 6:28 p.m., two males in a dark blue/teal Mazda 6 approached a person at the Shell Gas Station on East Lake Crescent. The license plate was an unknown out of province plate. The males requested money for gas to get to BC. They advised they would pay back the person double once they reached their destination and then offered gold they claimed was 18k.

The gold rings and chains were examined at a jewellers and determined to be fake. The males are Middle Eastern in descent with a thick accent and are claiming to be from Saudi Arabia. One male is very short and overweight (pictures from Shell Incident provided).

On Dec. 15, 2020, at approximately 5:00 p.m., three people were approached by two males selling fake gold in the parking lot by Scotiabank and London drugs. They were driving a blue Kia style 4 door sedan with an unknown Ontario licence plate. This time they stated that they were from Vancouver and were headed to Toronto. $450.00 in gold (later determined to not be gold) was purchased.

Male 1 is described as:

Approximately 40 yrs old

Approximately 5’5 and heavy set with short hair

He was wearing dark jeans and fancy brown shoes

Male 2 is described as:

Approximately 40 yrs old

Approximately 5’6 with a slim build, he has a beard and greying black hair

He was wearing glasses, a bright blue jacket and he smokes
