Canmore RCMP travel advisory – Poor winter driving conditions

Canmore, Alberta – (2:35 AM) Canmore RCMP are warning motorists against travel in the area. High, gusting winds and blowing snow along Highway 1, between the Kananaskis River and Dead Man’s Flats, are causing visibility and travel issues. Visibility, due to high volumes of blowing snow, has been significantly reduced. This has also allowed for snowdrifts to form in areas along the Highway in both driving lanes, on bridge decks and on / off ramps. The blowing snow is also causing icy sections to form. RCMP are urging caution and to only travel if it is necessary.

If you must travel, please ensure all vehicle lights are functioning, visible and that your vehicle is clear of snow so other drivers can see you. Drive to the changing winter road conditions. Plan to reduce your speed and allow extra time to reach your destination. Carry an Emergency Kit with you, including extra winter clothing, blankets or sleeping bag. If you do go off the road, it could be sometime before Emergency Services or Tow Trucks are able to reach you.

Similar conditions exist presently on 1) Highway 1x between Highway 1 and 1A and 2) Highway 1A from Highway 1X to Exshaw.
