Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP investigates fake reports of fires: Newfoundland and Labrador

Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador – Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP is investigating multiple fictitious reports of fires made to the Port Aux Basques Fire Department.

The calls started this past summer and continued for a short time. However, more than nine such calls were placed to the fire department between December 20-23, 2020. The fire department operates using a call-in paging system where a caller leaves a recorded voice message indicating the details of the fire. Firefighters are dispatched based on the information received in the page. Police suspect the phone numbers, which are not legitimate, that are displayed on the paging system are being obtained online through an internet application.

The calls for service are unnecessarily tying up emergency responders and police fear this action may impact the actual need for legitimate fire services in the area. RCMP NL warns that this type of activity is illegal and that the person(s) found responsible could face criminal charges of public mischief.

The investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information about the origin or source of these calls are asked to contact Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP at 709-695-2149 or contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (TIPS is 8477), by Secure Web Tips at www.nlcrimestoppers.com, or by downloading the free and secure mobile app. Search the App Store for “P3 Tips”.
