Suspended RCMP police officer charged with firearms offences

St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador – Constable Michael Wheeler, most recently stationed at Holyrood Detachment, was arrested today and charged with firearms offences following an investigation overseen by the Serious Incident Response Team Newfoundland and Labrador (SIRT-NL).

The following charges were laid in relation to an incident involving Wheeler and an acquaintance at a private residence:

Section 86(1) Criminal Code – Careless Use of a Firearm

Section 87(1) Criminal Code – Pointing a Firearm.

Wheeler has been suspended with pay since February 28, 2020, as per RCMP policy, and will continue at this status subject to the outcome of the court and internal processes.
