Portage RCMP respond to an assault, officer injured; “female grabbed the officer’s hand and bit down hard on the officer’s fingers”

Portage la Prairie, Manitoba – On January 18, 2021, at approximately 8:40 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report that a female was attempting to steal a taxi cab and had assaulted the driver on 6th Avenue NE in Portage. When officers arrived on scene, a female was in the front passenger seat of the cab, which was still running and driveable. She was yelling through the windows in an incoherent manner. She had damaged the dashboard and made a mess of documents and items. Her behaviour led officers to believe she was impaired by drugs.

An officer approached the vehicle and told her to get out. She would not exit the vehicle. When the officer reached in to attempt to extricate her from the vehicle, the female attempted to scratch the officer’s face. She was removed from the vehicle and placed on the ground while the officer was placing her under arrest. At that point, the female grabbed the officer’s hand and bit down hard on the officer’s fingers. The officers at the scene were able to get the female into handcuffs and into a police vehicle.

The 21-year-old female from Winnipeg is facing charges of Assaulting a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Mischief. Further charges are possible.

The cab driver was not injured.
