Whitehorse, Yukon – On April 4, 2021 at approximately 7:30p.m. Whitehorse RCMP were contacted to assist in locating a missing 7-year-old child who had been separated from their family while running dog sled teams at Fish Lake. Weather conditions were poor with blowing snow and below freezing temperatures. RCMP immediately activated Yukon Search and Rescue (YSAR), contracted helicopter support, and deployed snowmobiles for the search. The pilot flying the helicopter observed the child and was able to lead the RCMP via helicopter to the location. The child was then transported via helicopter to be cleared medically and returned to their family.

The child had been trained in winter survival and knew to stay in one place, tied off the dogsled team, put on extra layers of clothing, sought shelter, and waited to be found.

“This was a fortunate outcome for a Yukon family, with thanks to the volunteers at Yukon Search and Rescue and Gerd at Alpine Aviation.” says Whitehorse RCMP Detachment Commander Inspector Lindsay Ellis. “The actions of this child were exemplary under the difficult circumstances – this child is truly amazing”. Yukon RCMP and YSAR wish to remind the public to be prepared for the winter elements, always have a two-way communication device on your person.
