Edmonton, Alberta – On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, just after 3 a.m., police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was believed to have been involved in a criminal flight the day prior (April 19, 2021). The vehicle, a silver Mazda3, refused to stop, at which time officers engaged in a criminal flight response in the area of 105 Street and 74 Avenue. After a few minutes, Air1 took over monitoring the Mazda3 and responding officers on the ground were instructed to terminate the pursuit.
A 24-year-old male passenger got out of the Mazda3 in the area of 97 Street and 81 Avenue and was arrested a block away on outstanding warrants.
The Mazda3 continued to flee and was observed operating in a dangerous manner, as Air1 continued to monitor its path of travel. Given the erratic driving patterns, responding ground members initiated deliberate vehicle contact with the Mazda3 in the area of 48 Street and 34 Avenue.
When the Mazda3 finally came to a stop, the 19-year-old male driver attempted to flee when a struggle ensued with members, and force was applied to apprehend the male.
Paramedics treated and transported the male driver to hospital for further observation. His injuries were considered to be serious, but non-life-threatening at this time.
19-year-old Allen Manning was released from hospital on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, and remanded into custody at the Edmonton Remand Centre. He is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, flight from a peace officer, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, possession of a controlled substance, resisting a peace officer and breaching conditions of a release order (x6).
The Director of Law Enforcement was notified on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 and directed ASIRT to investigate the circumstances surrounding the uses of force and arrest of the man. As such, the EPS will not be providing further comment.
