Griffith Island Helicopter Crash Claims all Onboard

Resolute Bay, NU – On April 25, 2021, at 8:30 pm, a member of the Polar Continental Shelf Program reported to the RCMP in Resolute Bay that a search was currently underway for a helicopter with three people onboard. The aircraft was scheduled to arrive at 4:45 pm, they tried unsuccessfully to communicate with the aircraft. A twin otter flew over the last known position of the aircraft and saw debris consistent with a crash on Griffith Island, approximately 22 kilometres South West of Resolute Bay.

In consultation with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), a search and rescue team was coordinated and left Resolute Bay at about 9:45 pm. In the early morning hours of April 26, 2021, the search and rescue team arrived at the site and reported that there were no survivors, all three people in the helicopter were found deceased.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing in conjunction with Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Office of the Chief Coroner. The RCMP would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Emergency Management Organization (EMO), the Wildlife Office of Resolute Bay and the three-man Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) team that made the trek to the wreckage site.
