Edmonton, Alberta – On Tuesday April 27, 2021, an initial autopsy was completed in the death of Billie Johnson, whose remains were recovered on April 21, 2021. Due to the state of the remains, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner requires further tests to be completed prior to determining cause of death.

Through an extensive investigation, Homicide detectives located Johnson’s remains on private farmland several kilometres northwest of Bon Accord. DNA tests confirmed the identity as Billie Johnson, 30.

Billie Wynell Johnson, 30, was last seen in the area of 113 Street and 107 Avenue on the evening of December 24, 2020.
(EPS) Billie Wynell Johnson, 30, was last seen in the area of 113 Street and 107 Avenue on the evening of December 24, 2020.

After police completed a search of the area, the family of the deceased was escorted to the site for private access to grieve and perform cultural rituals. EPS would like to thank RCMP Morinville Detachment, the RCMP Special Tactical Operations team and the volunteer search and rescue teams who assisted with the search, as well as the landowner, who has been very cooperative.

“The outstanding and determined work of our homicide detectives is what led to this conclusion,” says Staff Sergeant Colin Leathem of the EPS Homicide Section. “We had already gathered enough evidence to lay charges, but for the detectives leading this investigation, it was always about finding Billie and returning her home – giving her family the chance to observe their sacred cultural rites. It was very meaningful for all of us to be able to do that.”
