Botwood man fled following traffic stop and attempted to disarm police officer, charged with numerous criminal offences

Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador – Fifty-three-year-old Clifford Ellis is charged with numerous criminal offences following a traffic stop in Botwood on April 25, 2021.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP attempted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Commonwealth Drive in Botwood. The vehicle failed to stop for police and continued to travel until reaching a residence on Mill Road. Ellis exited the vehicle and displayed aggressive behaviours towards the officers and threatened to damage the police vehicle. He then resisted arrest and a physical altercation occurred. During the arrest process, Ellis assaulted the officer and attempted to remove the officer’s pistol from the holster but was unsuccessful. A taser was deployed and Ellis was taken into police custody.

Ellis attended court earlier this week and was remanded into custody.

He is charged with the following criminal offences:

Flight from Police

Assaulting a police officer

Attempting to disarm a police officer

Resisting arrest

Uttering threats to damage property

Uttering death threats

He attends court again today.
