Wood Buffalo RCMP Attend Large Grass Fire Hwy. 63 North

On May 8th, 2021 at approximately 4:22 P.M. the Wood Buffalo RCMP and Fire department were dispatched to a large grass fire heading towards the wooded area on the southbound side of Hwy. 63 just north of the Parsons Creek overpass.

Fort McMurray, Alberta – On May 8th, 2021 at approximately 4:22 P.M. the Wood Buffalo RCMP and Fire department were dispatched to a large grass fire heading towards the wooded area on the southbound side of Hwy. 63 just north of the Parsons Creek overpass. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished shortly thereafter.

There were no injuries sustained and no property damage reported. It is unknown at this point how the fire started, however witness spotted several off road vehicles near by indicating it may have started due to a combination of heat from the vehicles and the dry conditions.

Although there is no fire ban currently in place, the Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to remind the public that there is a fire advisory currently in place for the Fort McMurray forest area. There are expected high winds in the near weather forecast and the current wild fire danger level is high. Therefore, residents of Wood Buffalo need to be mindful of operating off road vehicles in a responsible manner, abstaining from throwing cigarette butts out their vehicle windows and keeping backyard fires under control.
