Portage la Prairie RCMP respond to report of an armed theft of a vehicle; “14-year-old girl had been waiting in the vehicle”

Initial reports also indicated there was a youth in the car at the time it was stolen from outside a residence on Dufferin Avenue West in Portage.

Portage la Prairie, Manitoba – On May 9, 2021, at approximately 9:50 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of an armed theft of a vehicle. Initial reports also indicated there was a youth in the car at the time it was stolen from outside a residence on Dufferin Avenue West in Portage. Officers responded immediately, and it was quickly determined a 14-year-old girl had been waiting in the vehicle for her father when she was approached by two males. The youth was sprayed with bear spray and forced from the vehicle. The two males then fled in the vehicle.

Just a few minutes later, police received information that a vehicle was involved in a collision on 3rd Street SE and the two males fled on foot. When police arrived, they learned it was the stolen vehicle involved in the collision. Then police received a report of an attempt to steal a vehicle from 4th Street SE and Countess Avenue. The males were unsuccessful in getting into that vehicle and continued to run. Officers contained the scene and contacted Police Dog Services, who attended to assist. The Police Dog Handler deployed his dog, Jolt, who tracked the suspects.

Jolt tracked one of the males to 4th Street NE, where he was found walking northbound. He attempted to run from police, but was quickly apprehended. He resisted arrest and attempted to retrieve a knife from his pocket. Duncan Atkinson, 23, from Long Plain First Nation is remanded in custody on charges of Robbery with a Weapon, Assault, Fail to Surrender, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Weapons Possession Contrary to Order, and Possession of Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose. The second male has yet to be apprehended. The investigation is continuing.

The 14-year-old female was treated for her injuries and released.
