ASIRT investigating after man becomes unresponsive in Edmonton police custody

Edmonton, Alberta – On Thursday, May 27, 2021, at approximately 11:48 p.m. EPS responded to the area of 32 Street and 138 Avenue to assist EMS. It was reported that police assistance was required for paramedics who were attempting to treat a 50-year-old male who was showing signs of intoxication and was exhibiting combative behaviour.

While officers assisted EMS with restraining the male to facilitate further medical treatment, his behaviour continued to be erratic and he resisted. Paramedics then successfully administered sedatives.

Shortly thereafter, the male became unresponsive and went into medical distress. EMS immediately began CPR and transported the male to hospital where he remains in serious condition today, Friday, May 28, 2021.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has since directed ASIRT to lead the investigation into this incident. As such, the EPS will not be providing further comment.
