Lethbridge Police release sketch in connection with suspicious fires – UPDATED

Lethbridge Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in a series of suspicious fires on May 18,2021.

Lethbridge, Alberta – Lethbridge Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in connection with three suspicious fires Sunday, May 30, 2021.

The first fire was reported just after 4 a.m. in an alley in the 600-block of 5 Street South. Lethbridge Police evacuated homes on either side of the fire, which destroyed a van and garage and spread to a second vehicle. There were also two other smaller fires, in the 1500-block of 14 Avenue South and 1700-block of 12 Avenue South that morning. All were deemed to be suspicious in nature.

Police have obtained video footage of a person of interest seen in the area of one of those fires. Anyone with information to provide police to assist in the investigation is asked to call 403-328-4444 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

BACKGROUND

The first fire, which began in a couch in an alley in the 500-block of 12 Street South, was reported about 2:20 p.m. A second was reported 15 minutes later, in the 600-block of 5 Street South, with another couch set on fire. A third incident around the same time involved a grass fire just off Scenic Drive toward 7 Avenue South. All were deemed suspicious in nature.

A composite sketch is being released of a suspicious person – described as a male between 20 and 30 years of age with a light complexion and brown, wavy hair – who was seen in the area of one of those fires.
