ASIRT investigating Edmonton Police Service officer-involved shooting west of city

Edmonton, Alberta – At approximately 12:05 pm. this afternoon, Saturday, June 5, 2021, a West Division patrol member responded to a recovered stolen vehicle and trailer call, wherein the alleged suspects were still on scene at a property near 218 Street and Stony Plain Road.

As the EPS cruiser approached the stolen vehicle, the suspect vehicle rammed the EPS vehicle, before entering into a criminal flight at a high rate of speed travelling west of the city. An unmarked EPS vehicle being operated by a different West Division member followed the suspect vehicle, which had slowed down on Highway 16A.

The suspect vehicle subsequently turned west onto Secondary Grid Road 628 near Enoch, where it came to a stop. It is alleged the suspects then exited the vehicle, at which time shots were exchanged between the suspects and the EPS member.

The suspects then reportedly got back into the stolen vehicle and fled westbound on Secondary Road 628, before eventually rolling the vehicle into a ditch. The suspects then fled the scene on foot and into a nearby farmer’s field.

EPS and its RCMP partners deployed various resources to the scene, including drones and Air 1, and eventually located the two suspects hiding in a nearby treed area. The two suspects surrendered and were taken into custody earlier this afternoon.

No officers were injured during the incident. One suspect was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The second suspect was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

EPS will not be providing further comment, as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since taken the lead in this investigation.
