Small plane crash-lands into slough near Alberta Highway 640, pilot trapped with injuries

On June 6, 2021, at 7:55 p.m. Vermillion RCMP received a report of a small plane having crash landed in a slough near Highway 640 between Range Road 45 and Range Road 50.

Heinsburg, Alberta – On June 6, 2021, at 7:55 p.m. Vermillion RCMP received a report of a small plane having crash landed in a slough near Highway 640 between Range Road 45 and Range Road 50.

Vermillion RCMP and emergency medical services attended and located a small single engine Cessna plane with the lone pilot, a 65-year-old male from Clandonald, Alta., trapped in the plane with injuries. The plane had sustained damages to the wing and body. Vermillion River County Rescue were able to extricate the pilot who was taken to the hospital for treatment and then air lifted by STARS to an Edmonton hospital for further treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Early indications are that the pilot attempted to land on a private airstrip and the aircraft wing hit a tree on the downwards path causing difficulties with the landing.

Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash. An RCMP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene.
