Man succumbs to injuries following aggravated assault, 20-year-old charged

Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 20-year-old man with manslaughter following an aggravated assault earlier this month.

On Thursday, June 3, 2021 at approximately 4 a.m., police were called to a disturbance at a residence in the area of 69 Avenue and 173 Street.

Upon arrival, officers located Roderick Chonkolay, a 30-year-old male, with serious injuries. 20-year-old Russell Adams was arrested on scene and charged with aggravated assault in relation to the incident.

Chonkolay succumbed to his injuries a few days later on Sunday, June 6, 2021. An autopsy was conducted on Thursday, June 10, 2021 and the cause of death was determined to be a stab wound. As a result, the charge of aggravated assault has since been upgraded to manslaughter.

Adams is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
