Fatal collision with fire on Alberta Highway 897 claims two lives

Elk Point, Alberta – On June 15, 2021, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Elk Point RCMP received a 911 call of a disturbance and possible explosion on Highway 897 on Unipouheos First Nation, Alta.

Elk Point RCMP attended and located a serious head on motor vehicle collision between two vehicles that resulted in one of the vehicles igniting on fire.

Emergency services and fire services also attended the scene to extinguish the fire. The 29-year-old female driver and lone occupant from St. Albert, Alta., and the 39-year-old male driver and lone occupant of the other vehicle from Moosomin First Nation, Sask., were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The names of the deceased will not be released.

Elk Point RCMP, along with an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist, are investigating the cause of this fatality.

No further updates are anticipated.
