Edmonton, Alberta – The EPS Child Protection Section has charged a former elementary school teacher with sexual assault in connection to several incidents that allegedly occurred at a west Edmonton school over the last several years.
It was reported to police that the now 55-year-old accused committed the offences against three of his elementary school students between 2016 and 2019. Two of the girls were nine years old at the time of the alleged offences with the third girl being 11 years old.
All of the offences, which reportedly included fondling over and under the clothing of three female students, allegedly occurred during regular school hours inside the accused’s classroom throughout the school year.
Gilbert Lavigne, 55, of Edmonton, is charged with sexual assault (x4) and sexual exploitation (x4). Lavigne remains in custody at this time with his first court appearance scheduled for Monday, Aug. 30, 2021.
Recently retired, Lavigne taught in numerous public schools across the city over his 30-year career. Investigators believe there may be additional complainants and are encouraging anyone who may have been victimized to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
