Jasper Avenue collision results in serious injuries to female driver: Edmonton Police

Edmonton, Alberta – Early this morning, Monday, July 26, 2021, at approximately 3:40 a.m., a lone officer was travelling eastbound in a marked police vehicle on 103A Avenue, when he witnessed a black Chevrolet Silverado driving westbound toward him in the wrong lane. Bystanders in the area flagged down the officer to inform him that they suspected the driver to be impaired.

The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the Silverado, but the driver fled westbound on Jasper Avenue at high speeds. Due to the concern for public safety, given the operator’s driving patterns, the officer pursued the vehicle. While the driver attempted to turn northbound onto 124 Street from Jasper Avenue, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a light pole and tree on the west curb of 124 Street.

The responding officer approached the immobilized vehicle as the driver attempted to flee on foot. While attempting to take the suspect into custody, a struggle ensued, and the officer deployed his conductive energy weapon (CEW) to gain control.

Paramedics treated and transported the female to hospital where she remains in serious, but stable condition. Two other individuals who were occupants in the vehicle did not report any injuries. Investigators located drugs and firearms inside the vehicle.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed ASIRT to lead the investigation into this incident due to the injuries sustained by the driver. As such, the EPS will not be providing further comment.

The EPS will maintain the criminal investigation into the dangerous driving.
