Parkland RCMP search for missing boater at Wabamun Lake – Update – located deceased

Parkland County, Alberta – At approximately 8:30 a.m., on July 28, 2021, Parkland RCMP received a report that boaters on Wabamun Lake had located a deceased male in the water.

Parkland RCMP attended and with the use of the RCMP boat, the deceased was recovered and is believed to be that of the missing 20-year-old male from Edmonton.

Parkland County RCMP would like to thank the partner agencies who were involved in the search for the missing male, including: Parkland County Fire, Central Alberta Recovery Dive Society (CARDS), and Alberta Parks Conservation Officers. Each of these agencies provided additional boats and personnel. CARDS provided divers, Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) equipped with cameras and sonars, and a sonar equipped boat. Parkland County RCMP would also like to thank the public who helped search the area in their personal boats, and the Wabamun Marina for providing additional boats to aid in the search, as well as for providing support for the family.

Parkland RCMP search for missing boater at Wabamun Lake

Wabamun, Alta.—On July 23, 2021, at approximately 9 p.m., Parkland RCMP received a report of a boater that had been swimming in the water near Kapasiwin on Wabamun Lake, Alta., and was in distress and went missing.

Efforts of the other occupants of the boat to assist the 20-year-old male from Edmonton who was missing were unsuccessful. Parkland RCMP attended and a boat search on the water was conducted by fire services, and ground searches by Parkland RCMP until conditions would not allow the search to continue.

On July 24, 2021, at approximately 10 a.m., Parkland RCMP, along with the assistance of the Central Alberta Recovery Dive Society (CARDS) team, resumed searching with boat patrols that included CARDS’ sonar technology and a robotic underwater vehicle. The search continued until approximately 8 p.m.; however, the swimmer was not located.

Today, July 25, 2021, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Parkland RCMP, along with CARDS’ assistance and the assistance of Alberta Conservation officers, resumed the search of Wabamun Lake for the missing swimmer. Search efforts are ongoing.

Parkland RCMP are asking anyone on Wabamun Lake in the area of the search to remain clear to allow room to work.

Parkland RCMP are also asking anyone who is on Wabamun Lake for recreational purposes to keep an eye out for signs of the missing swimmer.
