ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting in southeast Edmonton

Edmonton, Alberta – On July 27, 2021 at 9:36 p.m., police were called to a hotel in the area of 53 Avenue and Calgary Trail after it was reported that a male suspect was damaging vehicles and discharging a firearm in the parking lot.

The suspect left the area on foot, and was later located by EPS Tactical officers at 9:46 p.m. in the area of Gateway Boulevard and 54 Avenue.

Tactical members exited their vehicle and engaged the suspect, who then turned and fled on foot. Following a foot chase, a confrontation occurred between the suspect and police, and officers discharged their firearms.

EMS responded immediately to render aid, but the male was declared deceased. No EPS officers were harmed during this incident. A firearm was located on scene.

The EPS will not be providing further comment, as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since taken the lead in this investigation.
