Edmonton Police investigating in-custody death

Edmonton, Alberta – On Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at approximately 7:21 p.m., police received a report of an unidentified male acting erratically and attempting to break into a residence in the area of 127 Avenue and 121 Street.

The suspect description matched another call for service that was received minutes prior in the same area, in which it was reported that the subject male was sweating profusely and acting irrationally.

Upon entering the residence, police established that the male had broken into the residence and located him lying on the floor in the basement. When police took the male into custody, he went into medical distress. Officers immediately began performing CPR and contacted EMS.

Despite life-saving efforts of EMS and police, the male was pronounced deceased on scene.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified, and has ruled that the death is to be treated as an in-custody death, with EPS leading the investigation into this incident.
