Athabasca RCMP and Emergency Response Team officer involved shooting, ASIRT to investigate

Calling Lake, Alberta – On Aug. 26, 2021, at approximately 7:46 p.m., Athabasca RCMP members responded to a report of a female who allegedly sustained injuries from a suspect male discharging a firearm, in the area of Calling Lake, Alta. Athabasca RCMP were advised the female victim, of Calling Lake area, had been transported to hospital and was in stable condition.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Athabasca RCMP located the male suspect, who was also believed to be from Calling Lake area. Athabasca RCMP set up containment around the residence and had interactions with the suspect, while the Alberta RCMP Police Dog Service and Emergency Response Team were engaged and en route. The suspect exited the residence several times during the containment, aware of police presence.

At approximately 10:52 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and a confrontation occurred, which resulted in two RCMP officers discharging their service weapons. The suspect sustained serious life threatening injuries as a result of this incident. The suspect re-entered his residence and was subsequently followed and located by RCMP members. On-scene officers provided medical assistance and the suspect was transported to hospital where he is continuing to receive medical assistance. No RCMP officers sustained injuries.

The RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable. This is why, as soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police during this investigation.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the duty status of the members involved will be subject to review. The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099.
