Collision between tanker truck and delivery van on Alberta Highway 43 results in explosion, road closure expected to continue for hours – UPDATED

Lac Ste. Anne County, Alberta – (17-Sept-2021 4:40 PM) Parkland RCMP, Lac Ste. Anne County Fire Services, and Alberta Health Services attended the area of Hwy 43 and Hwy 33, Lac Ste. Anne County in response to a report of a two vehicle motor vehicle collision involving a panel van and a fuel tanker.

As a result of the collision the fuel was ignited causing a large fire that blocked traffic in all directions.

The fire crews were unable to extinguish the blaze due to the nature of the fuel. Traffic in the area was closed in all directions due to the size of the blaze.

Both drivers were treated on scene by Emergency Medical Services and transported to hospitals in Edmonton via ground ambulance. Details of the extent of their injuries are not known.

Lac Ste. Anne County Fire Services remained on scene to monitor the fire. EMCON is in the area conducting traffic and local detours.

Investigation is active and ongoing.  Roads to remain closed at the discretion of Lac Ste. Anne Fire Services.

BACKGROUND

Lac Ste. Anne County, Alberta – (17-Sept-2021 1:44 PM) Parkland RCMP received a 911 call at 10:19 a.m., today of an injury motor vehicle collision between a semi-tractor tanker truck and a delivery van on Highway 43 near Highway 33 that resulted in an explosion.

Fire, EMS and police attended the scene. The highway is closed for the investigation and fire services continues to manage the fire.

This road closure is expected to continue for hours and traffic is being diverted to adjacent range and township roads. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

The drivers, lone occupants of the vehicles, were taken to hospital by ground ambulance with unknown levels of injury.
