UPDATE: 26-year-old charged with murder and disregard for human life following investigation of fatal fire in Falher, Alberta

Falher, Alberta – RCMP Major Crime Unit have laid charges in relation to this investigation.

Roderick Ellery-Sorensen (26) of Falher, Alta. was arrested and charged with:

· Second degree murder

· Arson: disregard for human life x 2

After a Judicial Hearing, Ellery-Sorensen was remanded into custody to appear in Peace River Provincial Court on Sept. 27, 2021.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes would like to thank the community for their assistance throughout this investigation.

As these matters are now before the courts, no further information will be provided.

BACKGROUND

McLennan, Alberta – On Sept. 22, 2021, at approximately 1:15 p.m., McLennan RCMP and Smoky River Fire Services responded to a structure fire on Central Avenue in Falher, Alta.

After the fire was extinguished, human remains were found inside the burnt trailer. The remains are being transported to the medical examiner who will be working with the RCMP in determining identity and cause of death.

Due to the winds, the fire caused damage to the neighbouring house and apartment complex.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and is being led by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit with the assistance of McLennan RCMP, RCMP Forensic Identification Section and a Fire investigator.
