Winnipeg fire fatality turns into murder investigation

Winnipeg, Manitoba – At 8:38 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a bungalow in the 500 block of Young Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 8:56 a.m.

One occupant safely self-evacuated. WFPS crews completed a search of the structure and located one additional occupant. That individual was declared deceased on scene.

The fire is under investigation by WFPS and the Winnipeg Police Service. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Update:

Members of the Homicide Unit have continued with the investigation.

It is believed that foul play was involved in the death of the individual (a female) and that the fire had been deliberately set. Investigators are moving towards identifying the deceased female, and those efforts remain underway.

The fire occurred the morning of September 21, 2021, at 510 Young Street, which is a bungalow between Ellice Avenue and Sargent Avenue.

Detectives are asking the public for their assistance with any information that may assist the investigation. They are also asking for help from anyone who may have video surveillance in the nearby area.
