Calgary Police seek public assistance in identifying carjacking suspect

Calgary, Alberta – We are asking the public for help in identifying a man believed to be responsible for a carjacking that took place last week in the southeast.

On the morning of Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at approximately 8 a.m., a cab driver picked up an unknown man from the Best Western hotel, located at 3630 Macleod Trail. The man asked to be driven to the Somerset Ctrain station. As the cab travelled south toward the Ctrain station, the passenger requested that the cab driver stop at a convenience store en route, declining to go to a nearby store and requesting another location.

While stopped at a red light at the intersection of Shawville Boulevard and 162 Avenue S.E., the driver asked for payment before continuing to drive the man around. The man became upset and damaged the plastic divider in an attempt to assault the driver. The driver got out of the vehicle and tried to keep the rear passenger door shut to keep the man inside the vehicle, but the man was able to kick the door open.

The man then entered the driver’s door and drove away in the cab. The cab driver then called police to report the incident. The vehicle was located a short time later by police parked and unoccupied in the parking lot of the Cardel Rec South facility, located at 333 Shawville Boulevard S.E., but the man has not yet been located. The cab driver suffered minor injuries.

The suspect is described as having a slim build, short black hair and was wearing a dark coloured jacket.
