Cochrane RCMP investigate multi-vehicle fatality on Alberta Highway 8, UPDATE: All lanes of traffic are clear and have resumed

Rocky View County, Alberta – Cochrane RCMP and emergency services have cleared from the scene of the multi-vehicle collision on Highway 8 approximately 500 metres east of the Highway 22 traffic circle. All lanes of traffic are clear and have resumed.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that an SUV was traveling westbound on Highway 8 when it braked and is believed to have slid on ice into oncoming traffic. The SUV collided into a heavy duty pick-up truck that was traveling eastbound on Highway 8, causing the SUV to spin back into the westbound lane, striking a pick-up truck that had been traveling westbound behind the SUV. The SUV and pick-up truck came to rest in the north ditch. The heavy duty pick-up truck came to rest in the south ditch.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries and the 72-year-old female passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the SUV was transported to hospital by EMS and remains in hospital in serious condition. Both occupants of the SUV are from Cochrane. The name of the deceased will not be released. The driver and lone occupant of the heavy duty pick-up truck from Calgary was taken to hospital by EMS with serious injuries but has since been released. The driver and passenger of the pick-up truck—both of Cochrane—were assessed by EMS at the scene.

Cochrane RCMP continue to investigation this fatal collision with the assistance of the Alberta RCMP Collision Reconstructionist.

BACKGROUND

Rocky View County, Alberta – On Nov. 23, 2021, at 4:14 p.m., Cochrane RCMP, along with Redwood Meadows and Rocky View County Fire Services and EMS, responded to 911 call of a serious multi-vehicle motor vehicle collision between a two trucks and an SUV on Highway 8 approximately 500 metres east of the Highway 22 traffic circle.

This collision investigation is in the preliminary stages and details are limited; however, it is known that there is one fatality as a result of this collision and others with serious injuries. Further information will be provided when it is available.

Cochrane RCMP are asking motorists to avoid the area. Traffic is being diverted as Hwy 8 east of the Highway 22 traffic circle is blocked and this is expected to continue for several hours while this collision is investigated with the assistance of the Alberta RCMP Collision Reconstructionist.
