Ponoka RCMP respond to serious multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2 – UPDATED

Ponoka, Alta. – The Ponoka RCMP Traffic Services and all emergency and clean up crews have completed their work at the scene of the multi-vehicle collision on the QEII Highway at the Crandall overpass.

The northbound lanes of the QEII highway near the Crandall overpass are now clear and traffic has resumed as normal.

The Ponoka RCMP Traffic Services would like to thank the public for their patience with the extended road closure.

BACKGROUND

Ponoka, Alberta – On Nov. 25, 2021 at approximately 06:15 hrs, Ponoka Traffic Services was dispatched to a multi vehicle collision north bound on the QEII highway at the Crandall overpass.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a semi-tractor trailer unit had jackknifed on the QEII Highway and was subsequently struck by a second semi-tractor trailer unit. A third tractor trailer unit was unable to stop and slid into to the crash scene.

There has been one fatality reported as a result of the collision. Details regarding any other injuries or the number total vehicles involved is not available at this time.

The north bound lanes of the QEII highway are currently closed and northbound traffic is being rerouted at the Highway 53 overpass and is expected to continue for several hours.

A RCMP Collision Analyst has been called into assist with the investigation.

Freezing rain believed to be a factor in this collision. Numerous Alberta Highways have been impacted by the freezing rain.

The RCMP is requesting motorists take alternate routes and avoid the area of the collision, slow down and drive to the conditions as they can vary throughout the province.
