UPDATE: RCMP charge 37-year-old male with firearm, threat offences following Christmas Eve incident

Cochrane, Alberta – The Cochrane RCMP’s investigation into the Christmas Eve uttering threats incident of December 24, 2021, has resulted in an arrest and charges.

Cochrane RCMP initially responded to the Fireside Pharmacy at Fireside Gate for reports of a male causing a disturbance, threatening staff and pointing what was believed to be a firearm at employees. Further investigation into the uttering threats and pointing of a firearm led the Cochrane RCMP to attempt the arrest of a 37-year-old male on Dec. 24, 2021, at 5:30 p.m.; however, the male failed to exit his residence on Fireside Bend in Cochrane.

The suspect was contained awaiting additional resources from the RCMP Police Dog Service and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team. While contained inside his residence the male subject was seen pointing additional firearm replicas and threatening members with edged weapons. At approximately 8:40 p.m., the male was taken into custody by the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team.

Brett MORPAK (37) of Cochrane, Alta., is charged with:

· Three counts of Pointing a firearm

· Three counts of Uttering Threats to cause harm or death

· One count of Mischief over $5000

· One count of Resisting Arrest

Following a judicial hearing, Morpak was released with conditions of:

· No contact with the victims in this incident

· Not to possess any weapons or imitations thereof

· Not possess any firearms, cross bow, ammunition or imitation thereof

· Must report to probation officer

Morpak is scheduled to appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on January 11, 2022.

Heavy RCMP presence in the town of Cochrane, Alberta – CONCLUDED – Male taken into custody

Cochrane, Alberta – (9:51 PM) On Dec. 24, 2021, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Cochrane RCMP was dispatched to an uttering threats incident in Cochrane.

Cochrane RCMP responded to a residence in the area of Fireside Bend, and set up containment in the area while additional resources including the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) were deployed to the scene.

Some residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution. Residents in an area in proximity to the scene were requested to shelter in place.

RCMP were able to establish communication with the male. Upon the male exiting the residence he was taken into custody at approximately 8:40 p.m., with the assistance of Alberta RCMP ERT and RCMP PDS.

The male in his 30’s was arrested and transported by RCMP to the Cochrane Detachment. He will be held in custody and appear for a Judicial Interim Release hearing.

The Alberta RCMP would like to thank the community of Cochrane for their co-operation and patience, as well as the media for their assistance, during this incident.

Further details of the incident and identity of the accused will be released once criminal charges are laid before the courts.

BACKGROUND

Cochrane, Alberta – (6:21PM) Cochrane RCMP are asking residents in the area of Fireside to shelter in place as police respond to an incident.

Residents in the area of Fireside Bend, from Fireside Drive to Fireside Parkway, and to the east on Fireside Blvd north to Fireside Gate, unless otherwise direct by police.

There is an increasing police presence surrounding a home in that residential block and police will remain in the area until further notice.
