Foothills County RCMP charge Calgary male with impaired driving causing death

Foothills County, Alberta – Charges have been laid in the single vehicle collision which resulted in the death of a 28-year-old female.

As a result of the investigation into the collision which occurred just after midnight on June 8, 2021, Austin Garding (26) of Calgary has been charged with impaired driving causing death in relation to Makayla Poland (28) of Calgary who was a passenger in the vehicle.

In addition, Garding has also been charged with:

· Drive while blood alcohol exceeds legal limit causing death

· Dangerous driving causing death

· Impaired driving causing bodily harm

· Drive while blood alcohol exceeds legal limit causing bodily harm

· Dangerous driving causing bodily harm

· Fail to hold valid operators licence (TSA)

Garding will next be appearing in Okotoks Provincial Court on Jan. 14, 2022.

As these matters are before the courts, no further updates will be provided.

Foothills County RCMP investigate fatal single vehicle rollover

Foothills County, Alta. – On June 8, 2021, just after midnight, a single vehicle rollover collision involving a car was reported to police on the Big Rock Trail (378 Avenue W) West of the town of Okotoks.

EMS, Okotoks Fire Department, Foothills County RCMP and Okotoks RCMP responded.

There were 4 occupants in the vehicle, all are Calgary residents.

The vehicle had been travelling eastbound on Big Rock Trail approximately two kilometers north of Highway 7 when it lost control.

A 28-year-old female passenger, was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver, a 26-year-old male was taken by ground ambulance to a Calgary hospital with serious injuries.

A 20-year-old male was airlifted by STARS Air ambulance to a Calgary hospital with serious injuries.

A 28-year-old male was treated on scene for minor injuries.

The RCMP Collision Analyst is engaged, as well as the RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT).

All possible contributing factors related to this collision are being considered, and the collision remains under investigation.
