UPDATE: Second victim dies in Saskatoon’s first homicide of 2022, additional charges to be laid

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – The second victim related to the homicide that took place Wednesday, January 19th has succumbed to his injuries.  Phoenix Checkosis, 21 of Saskatoon died in hospital Thursday.  Kira Opoonechaw, 19, also of Saskatoon, died of her injuries on Wednesday.

A 20-year-old man, initially charged with Second Degree Murder and Attempted Murder, will be charged with a second count of Second Degree Murder.  He remains in custody.

BACKGROUND

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – A 20 year old Saskatoon man has been charged in connection with Saskatoon’s first homicide of the year.

At 1:40 PM on Wednesday, Jan. 19th, police responded to a report of an injured person in the 400 block of Ave. B N. When officers arrived they found two victims, a 21 year old man and a 19 year old woman suffering from stab wounds. Both were transported to hospital. The woman succumbed to her injuries. The man remains in critical condition.

The suspect was arrested a short distance from the scene. He has been charged with both 2nd degree murder and attempted murder. He will be appearing in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Thursday morning.

The victims and the suspect were known to each other. At the request of the family the name of the victim is not being released at this time.
