UPDATE: Bonnyville RCMP charge three for attempted car jacking; two arrested, one wanted

Elizabeth Metis Settlement, Alberta – On Jan. 31, 2022, at about 2:15 p.m., Bonnyville RCMP with the assistance of Cold Lake RCMP, Lakeland Crime Reduction Unit and RCMP Police Dog Services have located and arrested Joshua Lawrence Desjarlais (32) on his outstanding warrants.

Desjarlais was located at a residence on Elizabeth Metis Settlement. A loaded firearm was also recovered which is believed to have been used by Desjarlais during the commission of the offences. No one was physically harmed during the arrest.

Desjarlais has been remanded in custody following a Judicial Hearing. He is scheduled to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on Feb. 10, 2022.

BACKGROUND

Kehewin, Alberta – On Jan. 26, 2022, at approximately 5 a.m., Bonnyville RCMP responded to a report of an attempted carjacking with firearms by three males in Kehewin First Nations.

The two victims stopped and offered a male pedestrian a ride. The pedestrian accepted and asked to be dropped off at a nearby residence. Upon arriving at the residence two males approached the car with firearms and demanded the victims to get out of the vehicle. The pedestrian that was picked up also produced a firearm. When the victims refused a suspect fired a shot into the air at which point the victims got out of the car.

After a violent interaction the suspects fled the scene in a pickup truck and did not take the vicim’s vehicle. Police are not searching for the pickup truck.

Bonnyville RCMP have conducted an investigation and have obtained arrest warrants for two men. A youth has been arrested. His identity can not be released.

Laine Solway-Martial (23) and Joshua Lawrence Desjarlais (32), both of Elizabeth Metis Settlement, have been charged with:

· assault

· Careless use of a firearm

· pointing a firearm

· possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

· use firearm in commission of an offence

· unauthorized possession of a firearm

· uttering threats

Laine Solway-Martial is further charged with robbery with a restricted or prohibited firearm and one additional criminal charge.

Joshua Lawrence Desjarlais is further charged with Robbery with a firearm, discharge firearm with intent (x2) and one additional criminal charge.

Laine Solway-Martial is described as:

· 6’ tall

· 160 lbs

· Brown hair

· Brown eyes

· Medium skin tone

· Prominent tattoo of a cross on his forehead
