Vermilion RCMP investigate Arson to rural property; “As the suspects were leaving a small explosion occurred and the house became engulfed in flames”

County of Vermilion River, Alberta – On Feb. 8, 2022, at about 6:20 p.m., Vermillion RCMP responded to a call of suspicious activity at a residence on Township Road 490 in the County of Vermilion River. Upon arrival, responding officers observed a male and female suspect exiting the residence. As the suspects were leaving a small explosion occurred and the house became engulfed in flames. As a result of the explosion one of the suspects was knocked to the ground.

The male and female were immediately arrested. No responding officer or suspects were injured. Vermilion RCMP confirmed there were no occupants in the residence.

Officers at the scene noted several stolen items. Subsequently the Vermilion RCMP obtained a warrant to search the property.

Vermilion RCMP and County of Vermilion River Fire Investigator continue to investigate and remain on the scene.

Vermilion RCMP have charged Charlene Young (55) and Cody Nydokus (50) with:

• Arson under Section 434.1 of the Criminal Code

Both Young and Nydokus have had a judicial hearing and have been released with conditions. They are scheduled to attend court on Mar. 7, 2022 in Vermilion Provincial Court.

As this matter is before the court not further details can be released.
