Edmonton Police charge man in unreported 2020 shooting

Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 29-year-old Edmonton man following an unreported shooting in April 2020.

In April 2020, EPS Firearms Investigation Unit received information that a male was in possession of illegal firearms. On Thursday, April 10, 2020, a search warrant was executed at the man’s residence in the area of 73 Street and 134 Avenue and two shotguns, numerous rounds of ammunition and a small amount of fentanyl were located. David Goodman, who was 27 years old at the time, was taken into custody the same day and charged with possession of a prohibited firearm with readily accessible ammunition, possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of firearm contrary to prohibition order (x2) and possession of a controlled substance.

During the execution of the search warrant, a 34-year-old female staying at the residence complained of a previous injury and was transported to hospital by officers. Investigators later learned she had been shot a few days earlier, though she did not report it to police and declined police assistance. Her injuries were reported as non-life threatening and she was treated and released a few days later.

Through further investigation, including forensic examination of the shot guns, DNA testing and other collected evidence, officers were able to determine the woman had been shot by Goodman. On Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022, Goodman, who is currently incarcerated, was subsequently charged with careless use of a firearm. Other charges remain under consideration at this time.

“Firearms investigations are often lengthy and complex,” says Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart with the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit.

“Thanks to the determination of investigators and the wide range of investigative techniques used, our unit was able to successfully conclude this investigation, hold the suspect accountable and reduce the current gun violence occurring in the city of Edmonton.”
