Edmonton Police Service officer facing fraud charge

Edmonton, Alberta – An Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer is facing a fraud charge in relation to an August 2021 incident.

Constable Jeffery Benedict, a 14-year member of the EPS, has been charged with one count of Fraud Under $5000 in relation to a damage expense claim made by Cst. Benedict in August of 2021.

A 46.1 Notification to the Director of Law Enforcement was initiated by the EPS, and the EPS was directed to continue the investigation. Upon completion of the investigation, the case was referred to Alberta Crown Prosecution Services in Calgary, who recommended charges.

On Friday, April 1, 2022 Cst. Benedict was issued an Appearance Notice and will remain in a non-public facing position pending the resolution of these legal matters.

EPS Professional Standards Branch will commence an investigation under the Police Service Regulation (PSR) following the resolution of the criminal prosecution.

As the matter is currently before the courts, the EPS is not able to provide further comment or information about the incident or investigation.
